Arkansas Black is a variety of apples known for its unique, rich flavor and dark, almost black skin. It is a heritage apple, meaning that it is an older variety that has been around for many years. Arkansas Black apples are medium to large in size and have a round to oblong shape with a dark red to purplish-black skin that is often covered in white dots. They are considered a “winter” apple and are typically available from late autumn to early winter. Despite their dark skin, Arkansas Black apples have a light, sweet flavor with hints of spice that make them ideal for cooking and baking, as well as for eating fresh.
